Being tasked with trying to discover the dominant culture in a particular geographical or moral area many people immediately think of race and religion. Now while these do play a part, and in Ontario it's Christians of European descent. In large cities like Toronto this is perhaps not true but keep in mind we are taking Ontario as a whole. However, the typical association of culture with race and religion must be somewhat ignored here for we must look deeper.

In truth its exactly what you first think when you hear the term "Dominant Culture". It is the culture that is widely considered the norm, that which surrounds us every day, and whose voice cannot be silenced, and never ignored. It is broad, it holds stock in all other types of culture covered in this site.

For this page I have analyzed four articles from two different mainstream Canadian newspapers The Toronto Star, and the Globe and mail. The popularity of these papers is what drew me to them, as well as the quality of writing and the reputability of their statements and analysis.

Upon reading the articles, something became instantly clear to me; both papers were largely impartial to the debate between workers and employers. Mainstream media is generally considered to be a dark manipulative force, however here it seems they are simply presenting facts. While this may be an anomaly and while these articles rarely touch on the issue of race and how the statistics of precarious work change from race to race, I do think it is a positive thing that they act impartially and it is important to notice not simply the shortcomings of dominant culture but also (as rare as it may be) to praise them when it is due.
